2012-2013 Season Report

By the skin of its teeth Ray Jonsson's, Úrvalsdeild team UMF GRINDAVÍK was saved from relegation at the last game of the 2011 season. This season, time is running short and with 6 games left and nothing short of a miracle can prevent Ray's team from seeing Icelands 2nd tier "1.Deild" for the first time in 5 years.

STARTING XI

The veteran Azkal left back is no spring chicken at 33yo, yet has ever been a reliable player for UMF Grindavík. Listed and playing as a midfielder, he has actually increased his time on the pitch with the team from the last season.

2011 - Total minutes played, 768 and 14 games played total.
2012 - Total minutes played, 1,386 in 16 games(6 more to games to go).

The last time he played more minutes for the team was in 2009 when he totalled 1,845 min. in 21 league games.

He continues to be a part of the teams starting XI and has played in ALL previous league fixtures including 4 Icelandic Cup, totaling 20 games in all.

SMALL VICTORIES

Besides the imminent relegation, there were some "victories" of sort in the form of the teams "Icelandic Cup" performance. Grindavík were undefeated in the first 3 games, reaching the Semi Finals before bowing out to the eventual champions KR REYKJAVÍK.

GOAL!

To top of his resurgent league play, he also started and played all the Cup games and even managed to find the back of the net in the teams 0-3 away victory against Víkingur Reykjavík. Ray scored the last goal at the 78th minute.

TEAM RECORD

After 16 league games, UMF Grindavík record stands at 2-4-10, scoring 22 goals(the league average) but allowing a dismal 41. They are 12th in the 12 team league!

Their last league game is on September 29th. Barring injuries it looks like you'll be seeing "Ol' Reliable" in Azkals kit when it matters most, the Suzuki Cup.

*Suzuki Cup group stages begin Nov 24.
